GENDER EQUALITY
Equality between women and men (gender equality):-
refers to the equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities of women and men and girls and boys. Equality does not mean that women and men will become the same but that women’s and men’s rights, responsibilities and opportunities will not depend on whether they are born male or female.
A
QUOTE ON GENDER EQUALITY:-
“Gender Equality is more than a goal in itself. It is precondition for meeting the challenge of reducing poverty, promoting sustainable development and building good governance.”
-
Kofi Anan
For ages it was believed that the different characteristics, roles and status accorded to women and men in society are determined by sex, that they are natural and therefore not changeable.
There are many points which give rise to gender inequality -
I.
HOUSEHOLD
INEQUALITY-
The
birth of son is celebrated, the birth of daughter filled with pain; sons
are showered with love, respect, better food and proper health care.
II. EMPLOYMENT INEQUALITY-
In terms of
employment as well as promotion in work and occupation, women often face
greater handicap than men.
III.OWNERSHIP INEQUALITY-
In many
societies the ownership of property can also be very unequal. Even basic assets
such as homes and land may be very asymmetrically shared.
Effect of Gender Inequality-
Inequality leads to violence against women, including sexual violence
and rape, as well as economic inequality.
INSTRUMENTS TO ATTAIN GENDER EQUALITY -:
- educating girls.
- increasing literacy rates among women.
- increasing early childhood development interventions.
- increasing women’s labor force participation and strengthening labor policies affecting women.
- improving women’s access to credit, land and other resources.
- promoting women’s political rights and participation.
- expanding reproductive health programs and family support policies.
